Question by Niki T: What is the best way to condition/prepare for learning chinese martial arts?
There are no chinese martial arts schools where I live. I do have a friend who is a master in several different styles and willing to teach me but lives far away so I can only see him once in a while. Until the next time I can see him, I want to at least prepare the best I can so I am fit enough to learn as much as possible as fast as possible.

Is there any special exercises I should do to prepare or just do cardio and weightlifting to get my general physical condition up?

I actually posted this in the martial arts section but didn’t get anything. So hoping I’d get some answers this time.
To Elena S, when at any point, did I mention my background, my body size or shape, or my fitness level? You simply assume I’m a fat foreigner with no experience by what? I am in fact asian, not exactly young but not exactly old either at 19 and the master that I will be learning under is in fact chinese as well. I am not fat. I am petite and I used to be a gymnast when I was younger. It’s rather rude to assume that I am the worst case scenario at the drop of a hat.

You have to read up on the following stuff.

Strength training, speed training and all round flexibility, but don’t over do it and increase your limits with slow small steps at a time.

Take special note to warm up and cool down exercises, if these are not done correctly you will damage your muscles.

It maybe a better idea if you ask your teacher what he thinks.

Question by StudyKid243: Will learning a martial art help me get into college?
I really want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu and right now I’m having a little trouble asking my parents. I’m a sophomore in high school and I juggle other sports such as golf. I want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu as a hobby but do you think it would help me get into college such as something I could list or maybe somewhere I could get a letter of reccomendation from? I really want to take bjj but I think I would make a more convincing arguement it helped me get into a better college. Also later on if My bjj is very strong I want to become involved in Mixed Martial Arts is that a help too?

Answer by bettyboo
colleges will look at the activites u do in school mostly not the ones u did outside of school becuz they want to see that u wre invlved in school things like that u participate well in scool functions, havign outside activities shows tht u prfered to go other places than ur own school for fun, being involved in community service howver is somethign else completely, bjj might be a great thing to do to help ur body adn stuff but no college will droll over ur application becuz u tok it, it may show u are a bit more cultured but in the end it comes down to academics

Question by : Is it true that a key thing about learning martial arts is…..?
You should be able to live with the choices we make when using it? I mean, if we use it for either a good or bad thing, we should at least be willing and able to live with said choice? cause lately, i havent been feeling like myself, and my friend said that its cause my inner mind is in conflict. I keep trying to change myself into something else, but it winds up making me feel bad about myself constantly trying to train with a different mentality and i wind up doing less training than i used to. so im thinking that i should stop trying to change and instead just live with a choice im about to make.
LOL, i dont me THE key, i meant, one of the keys to martial arts

Question by : is it possible to learn martial arts with out taking classes?
like getting a DVD or something?theres no place where i live that give lessons or anything like that, and was wondering if i could just like buy a movie or something that can teach me, like the weight loss stuff you see on tv.

Best answer:

Answer by Keyboard Warrior
Commonly asked question here. The answer is no. DVD’s and books are supplementary material, not a replacement for gym/dojo time. You can mimic the moves you see, but you aren’t really committing the moves to muscle memory. Years and years of practice and drilling with live, resisting opponents, turns the moves into muscle memory. Plus you won’t have anyone there to tell you if your doing it right or wrong.
